Frequently Asked Questions for Hubs
What are hubs?
While the the hackathon is virtual, hubs are groups of people meeting in-person across different parts of the world to participate. Hubs are mostly run independently by local leaders and may vary in length and activities.
Where are the hubs?
Currently there are three planned hubs:
- Stanford, California, USA
- Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Sheffield, UK
If you might like to host a hub, please read through the FAQ below and reach out to levantehackathon@gmail.com.
What kind of space is need to host a hub?
The first week (July 6-10) is open to the public and consists of talks and tutorials. We recommend that participants book a single room with a projector, audio speaker, and good internet connectivity/wifi. The size of the room, layout, and number of seats may vary depending on the expected number of attendees.
The second week (July 13-17) is closed to hackathon participants. In addition to having a central meeting location as described above (with a projector, audio speaker, and wifi), it would be helpful to reserve or plan for a few additional small meeting spaces where participants would be able to engage with virtual or hybrid project groups as needed. If this is not possible, you may choose to host for the first week only.
How many attendees should each hub expect?
During the first week, talks are public and the total number of participants is at your discretion. A hub may choose how widely to advertise the event, to ask attendees to register in advance, and/or to cap attendance.
We expect official hubs to allow accepted hackathon participants to attend a hub if they so choose. For the three currently planned hubs, we will provide an estimate by mid-April of how many hackathon applicants to expect. As there are only 25 accepted applicants across the world, we expect the number of attendees per hub to be small. If no accepted hackathon participants are able to attend your hub, you may choose to host for the first week only.
I want to help attendees get to know each other. Should I plan any additional events?
Social events such as a coffee/tea time or meals are encouraged and can be arranged independently by hosts or attendees.
Can you help me with advertisement materials?
Yes, we have a flyer template and hubs are welcome to translate or modify the flyer as needed. If you are a hub, please reach out to levantehackathon@gmail.com if you would like a copy.
